The Pink Mac

Tethering Blackberry Tour to Mac.

So, I found an application that gives Mac users the ability to tether their Blackberry devices to their Macs. TetherBerry, costs about $50 but so far it is the only solution I have found that lets me utilize my mobile broadband plan.
In case you can’t watch the video and still want to know my tips on getting your Blackberry device to tether to your Mac, I am going to provide written directions below.
1. To begin, you will need to download the Tetherberry application on both your Mac and your Blackberry. Follow the link above, select Free Trial, and then choose the Mac Version of the software. From your Blackberry, open the TetherBerry webpage from your browser, select Free Trial, and then follow the URL provided to download the software onto your Blackberry.
2. Once you have successfully downloaded the software onto both your Mac and your Blackberry, go to Options on your Blackberry, then select Memory, and make sure Mass Storage Mode Support is ON and that Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected is either PROMPT or YES.
3. Next you must connect your Blackberry to your Mac via the USB cable that is provided to you with your Blackberry. At this point it would also be a good idea to check to make sure you are not connected to the internet by any other means. On your Mac, go to System Preferences and select Network. Check to make sure you are not connected to the internet at all before you continue.
4. The next step is to run the TetherBerry GUI on your computer and then also run the TetherBerry application on your Blackberry. You may need to provide your password in order to allow the connection between the Mac and the Blackberry on your computers end.
5. At this point, if everything has gone correctly, the Status of Tetherberry on your computer should say “TetherBerry Connection Active,” and you should see activity in the numbers of Packets and Data Sent and Received. You can also check that you are connected to TetherBerry by going back to the Network settings we visited earlier, where you should see that TetherBerry has an active connection.
6. Test your internet connection by opening up a browser window on your Mac. If it opens in a reasonable amount of time, you are good to go. However, if your browser does not open a new page or you get an error message from your web browser saying you are not connected to the internet, then Exit the TetherBerry Application (you may need to provide your password on your computer again) and then begin again from step 4 until the tethering is successful.
On a side note, the first time I attempted this method, it took me a few times of connecting and reconnecting to the TetherBerry software before my Mac was successfully receiving an internet connection. On subsequent attempts, it takes me two trials of step 4 onward to successfully get a browser page to load.

Blackberry Tour Tethering to Mac? Weekly Tech Roundup 08/15/09

This week, I discuss my new Blackberry Tour and how Verizon lied to me and sold me the phone WITH a tethering data plan even after I directly asked them if this phone would tether to a mac and they said yes! If anyone can help me with a “back door” method of achieving this, please let me know. I would like to make use of this mobile broadband plan I am paying for!

Logging Out

To be honest with you, sometimes my obsession with the internet can turn ugly. Spending the 5+ hours between work and bedtime behind the screen of my Macbook, browsing web sites, watching videos, checking email, and IMing can lead to total brain meltdown. It is easy to get caught up in everything the internet and technology offers, but it is also important to take some time away. Log out of the chat client, close your email and browser windows, shut down (or at least hibernate) the computer. Let your own batteries recharge.

Incase Hard Shells for 13" Pro Arrive!

It’s almost like Christmas in July, err, or rather August, as Incase has finally introduced their new Fall ’09 lineup of products for the Macbook! I am mostly interested, of course, in the new hard shell for the 13″ Macbook Pro, which has taken them nearly 2 months to reveal! Unfortunately, however, they have only listed this new product on the hard shell main page and the link for it directs back to the Macbook product list page. So, it might be a little while longer before we get to see what these new cases are made of, but don’t worry, you can count on me to stalk their website until I get a peek! So, what do we know of this elusive hard shell so far? Well, we know it comes in a variety of colors, black, clear, pink, green, and orange (a new fall addition no doubt)! I am curious to see how Incase worked around the new ports. Did they do a full cut out like Speck? Or did they form fit the case to each individual opening? We don’t know yet, but trust me, we will know soon enough! So keep an eye out for an update on my blog on these new hard shells! See ya soon!

AppleCare Beware.

Apparently, an Apple Authorized reseller in Australia has been having a few problems with Applecare fraud! When customers purchase the sealed Applecare box and then return home to register their serial number, they find that the numbers are invalid and have already been used. Once the issue was brought to the attention of Apple and the authorized resellers everything was worked out, so thankfully no legitimate customers lost money on the purchase of the Applecare, but this could become an issue if it is not just an few isolated incidents. It could be a problem of a simple misprint in numbers or perhaps an issue of hackers breaking the Applecare codes. Of course, I am only speculating but I just wanted to put out a buyer beware on Applecare. Remember, you can purchase your Applecare directly from Apple online after you have made an in-store purchase, and that might be the best way to be 100% safe!
